Nuture your human resources

PARK, October 21st, 2010

In design, human resources are less about the recruitment of design managers or designers, and more about getting the most out of talent that’s already on the payroll. That’s easier said than done. The tradition of designers being educators, of bringing young people on, is not as strong as it once was. Nor are there very many educational materials to hand that can help designers and design managers who already have more or less extensive work experience.

Still, while junior ranks can be filled quite cheaply from outside, adding middleweight or senior people doesn’t look much of an option for …

Engage silent designers

Florian Weiss, July 23rd, 2010

Design managers in technology-oriented companies often face the challenge to create awareness for design throughout the company. Many design related decisions are made by employees with no or limited design knowledge. Those people are not educated as designers, but make decisions that have an impact on the final design of the product. Two papers from the London Business School by Peter Gorb and Angela Dumas adressed this issue of “Silent Designers” already over twenty years ago (Silent Design and Why Design is Difficult to Manage).

Educate design managers in design!

Tim Selders, July 14th, 2010

That sounds like an open door. But in practice it is not…

Education programmes for design managers often focus strongly on business of managerial skills. They tend to forget further education on design, that goes beyond Master programmes at University.

Florian Weiss, July 27th, 2009

Next month the Universities Act of the Finnish Aalto University will come into effect, which was approved by the Parliament a month ago. According to the new law, the Aalto university will become effective in January 2010 and this is an important step for the new institution which is a merger of three established finnish universities: Helsinki’s School of Economics (HSE), University of Art and Design Helsinki (TaiK), and University of Technology (TKK). The three universities are already cooperating for the International Design Business Management Programme (IDBM) since 13 years. IDBM aims …

We just received from Jordi Morillo, coordinator of the design management master at IED in Barcelona, a description of a project & workshop they are running at their design management master.

It’s great to see that they are exploring how design can contribute to health and organizing the infrastructure around health, politics and people. And it’s also very smart that they’re doing this in partnership with a business consultancy and a health innovation consultancy to make sure to have different qualities and knowledge in such a complex challenge.

Seeing these initiatives, at PARK the question always raises if design does …
