Design Management Simply Explained

Jay Peters, June 7th, 2011

Design Management is still in its infancy compared to other longstanding management disciplines, and has yet to have a universal definition. PARK has written before on the topic of defining Design Management and continues to update the Wikipedia article we started in 2005.

Each year PARK runs a European Student Network (ESN) consisting of 18-20 bright minds form 9 leading European Universities with programs in Design Management who brings fresh insights into our discipline. In addition to working on real life design management challenges from a company sponsor, the students work with PARK on theoretical design management challenges. This year, …

What now, what next, where to?

The design management context (click image to download pdf)

Design management reaches the age of 45 (counting from the first publication in 1965) and is now in the middle of its midlife crisis, if we look on the current debates in the design management community. Inspired by Elvis, I raise the questions: What now, what next, where to?

What now?
The fight is over! Looking back on the history of design, management and design management, we can recognize that design gained credence in the business world and is today recognized as a valid business tool. This are not the credits …

‘Best practice’ in design

Sorena Veerman, April 30th, 2010

In today’s journey of design departments to become more effective and efficient more and more existing management models are used and copied to design: One of those being ‘best practice’.

Design Thinking: also for design departments?

Tim Selders, April 23rd, 2010

Design thinking is heavily discussed. During the last weeks I deep-dived many blogs, forums, and other online discussions on this topic. Lots of opinions, lots of passion and lots of blabla.

I will not add more of that…
But I do only want to stress that the design departments in companies are there to do design work to boost business and not to ‘design think’.

Design thinking is mostly defined as using the capabilities of the design profession to solve larger economical or social problems, in a different way than the so-far applied analytical approaches.

Designers can play a part …

Design management? KISS…

Tim Selders, December 16th, 2009

KISS. ‘Keep It Simple, Stupid’.
How to explain ‘design management’ to somebody who has never heard of it?
How to keep it dead simple?

I am currently at the Design Summit in India. Explaining that maximising the value of design is only possible when it is managed well.
To clarify what design management is all about, was quite tough…

Well, aren’t we supposed to be good in visualisation?

What do you think?
Of course, of course, this is a limited perspective…
But wouldn’t your grandmother understand this?

Design Thinking: the one and only definition!

Tim Selders, December 4th, 2009

Tphotohe one and only company that invented the label ‘design thinking’ is speaking out loud again. And along the way defining it in the only right way…

The last year many definitions on design thinking have been posted. We feel that many of these are not getting to the point and overpromise.

In the 2009 December issue of WIRED, ‘design thinking’ is featured in an eight page article about IDEO, the power house of innovation. It is defined as ‘a set of principles that can be applied by diverse people to a wide range of problems : immersion, synthesis, …
