“Cool design, man!”: discussing design quality

As a design manager you must have had numerous discussions about the quality of design work.

“I think these colors are cool!”
“This line expresses speed, to me at least…”
“I feel this font should be bigger.”
“Nice how these surfaces have a different feel…”
“This function really works awesome!”

These discussions take place amongst designers.
Or between designers and managers.
Or even between designers, managers and their wives.

Very often discussing design quality turns into subjective debates about taste, in fluffy words.
How can you keep these discussions professional and to the point?

Done the right way, it can revive a dying brand, create a substantial competitive advantage,  or put an unknown atop an industry. Two of our friends within the design industry, Aart van Bezooyen and Paula Raché, have just started a six month journey around the world. BMW just launched their latest concept: the BMW-i series.[1] What makes these cars so interesting is not BMW’s usage of innovative materials or production methodologies, nor the fact that it is a line of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles starting in 2013.[2] It’s the way they are approaching the future of mobility.
