Design Management Simply Explained

Jay Peters, June 7th, 2011

Design Management is still in its infancy compared to other longstanding management disciplines, and has yet to have a universal definition. PARK has written before on the topic of defining Design Management and continues to update the Wikipedia article we started in 2005.

Each year PARK runs a European Student Network (ESN) consisting of 18-20 bright minds form 9 leading European Universities with programs in Design Management who brings fresh insights into our discipline. In addition to working on real life design management challenges from a company sponsor, the students work with PARK on theoretical design management challenges. This year, …

Ingredient for a successful design culture: Hire the right people!

Amrita Bhui, May 31st, 2011

“At Google we give the impression of not managing the company because we don’t really.” -  Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman at Google

Is the above statement by Eric Schmidt as clear as it reads or does one need to read between the lines? Are we unnecessarily concerned about managing design or designing management when a company like Google says that it is really not managing one of the most successful companies in the world?

To find out lets delve deeper into what Mr. Schmidt had to say because as they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing (but didn’t …

The 15th European Design Management Conference organised by the DMI.

Interactive sketchnote conference recap on the thinkbrownstone blog.

Every year the conference brings together design management professionals, to discuss and listen to hot topics in managing design. The soul of design leadership

Frans Joziasse, May 5th, 2011

I have always been fascinated by reading books that give an unexpected perspective on the world.

One of my favourite authors by that means is Deepak Chopra, which for some people may be too fluffy. However Chopra with his esoteric perspective has moved recently into the field of business. In his book “The soul of leadership” he is stating seven behaviors of leaders. These should be learned by design leaders too:

1. Listen & Look: be an unbiased observer.
2. Emotional Bonding: understand your own specific needs and those of others.
3. Awareness: being aware of …

It’s not easy being green: Feel the future in Brazil

guest blogger: Aart van Bezooyen & Paula Raché, April 27th, 2011

Recently we visited Feel The Future in order to get a better understanding of the local culture and design scene in South-America. “Feel the Future” is a design-driven consultancy specialized in design, branding and innovation based in the center of Curitiba, Brazil. We discussed with director Kleber Puchaski (left on photo) and his creative team the local business culture, service design and the role of sustainability in a country with a booming economy.

Your company name sounds a bit mysterious. Can you tell us a bit more about where this name comes from and what your agency is doing?
I …

“Cool design, man!”: discussing design quality

Tim Selders, April 20th, 2011

As a design manager you must have had numerous discussions about the quality of design work.

“I think these colors are cool!”
“This line expresses speed, to me at least…”
“I feel this font should be bigger.”
“Nice how these surfaces have a different feel…”
“This function really works awesome!”

These discussions take place amongst designers.
Or between designers and managers.
Or even between designers, managers and their wives.

Very often discussing design quality turns into subjective debates about taste, in fluffy words.
How can you keep these discussions professional and to the point?

Firstly, identify the kind of design

Innovation Motivation

Jay Peters, April 5th, 2011

Across all industries, the focus seems to be on innovation, and rightly so. Done the right way, it can revive a dying brand, create a substantial competitive advantage,  or put an unknown atop an industry. Everyone seems to be on the innovation bandwagon, but not everyone knows exactly what that means, or how to make it happen. While the big buzzword often creates excitement among employees, it often also creates confusion.

Before any innovation can happen, you need to clarify with your team about what innovation means to your company, create alignment and set expectations. Is it incremental innovation? Disruptive …
